Comes from a sporting family; grandfather played football for Bulgarian national team and also Levski and CSKA Sofia, while older brother Ivan was a top junior footballer. Started playing tennis aged six. Favorite surface is hard. Best friend on tour is Harriet Dart. Admires Simona Halep's game. Speaks Bulgarian, English, Croatian and a little Russian.

In Grand Slam play, reached 2r at the Australian Open and Roland Garros for the first time. Set new career-high ranking of No.46 (July 29) and finished inside Top 50 for first time.

Claimed first WTA 125 event at 2023 Chicago (d. Liu in F). Reached second round at 2023 Wimbledon (l. Boulter). Reached career high ranking of No.71 on May 22, 2023.

Made four Tour-level appearances in 2019, highlighted by 2r showing at Osaka (as qualifier, d. Cornet, l. Osaka), while won title at $80K ITF/Biarritz-FRA (d. Kovinic in F)

Highlights of 2018 were Grand Slam main-draw debut at Australian Open (l. Gibbs in 1r) and first ever Grand Slam main-draw victory at Wimbledon (as qualifier, d. Smitkova, l. S.Williams). Also made 2r at Istanbul and Hong Kong

In 2017, reached 2r at Bastad (as qualifier, l. Krunic) and Linz (as qualifier, l. Golubic). Also fell 1r at Gstaad - making her WTA main draw debut - and in qualifying on 12 occasions (including all four majors)

Maiden Top-50 upset came over No.40 Goerges in 1r at 2017 Bastad (via ret.)

Made successful comeback from injury in 2016, winning 64 matches and four titles, rising over 300 places in the rankings. Since return has stopped playing doubles to protect injury
